Chapter 02

The Work

People, technology, and finding a way forward.

My working life has taken me through IT, technical support, retail leadership, automotive, and homebuilding. I've looked after systems, helped customers, led teams, and made tools to take an awkward task out of someone's day.

The setting changes. I keep enjoying the part where understanding how something works helps another person.

People, products, and teams.

My early career took me from sales into IT management in the United Kingdom. When I moved to the United States, I joined Geek Squad and progressed from consultation into management.

Later, I opened the Tesla Corpus Christi Gallery and recruited and developed its team. I now work as an Apple Community Specialist in the Channel Retail Program.

Across those roles, I've learned to pay attention to the whole experience: the explanation, the handoff, and whether someone feels they were listened to.

Making the work easier.

Sometimes I find myself looking at a repetitive task and wondering why we're still doing it that way.

In homebuilding, that led me to build tools that turned inventory reports into useful, targeted PDFs and made quote calculations easier. The information was there; getting it into a form someone could use was the interesting problem.

I enjoy that kind of work. A modest tool can be worth making when it removes a bit of friction from someone else's day.

My own corner: Wave Crash.

Wave Crash is my web-design business, working with local trades and small businesses around Corpus Christi and the Coastal Bend.

I like helping someone give their business a home online that feels right for what they do. A place that explains it clearly, makes getting in touch easy, and feels manageable for the person running it.

I design and build the site, with hosting and ongoing care available too. It brings together several things I enjoy: making something useful, giving it character, and working with the person it belongs to.

Still learning.

My early love of computers led me to study information systems at Swansea College. More recently, I completed front-end web development with eCornell. I've also worked through CompTIA Network+ and Security+ coursework.

Then there’s the education that comes with trying to make something work. A website, an automation, an idea that sounded straightforward until I started asking questions. That’s usually where I find the gaps in what I know.

The project gets better. So does my understanding. Occasionally, the supposedly simple idea gets a little bigger.
